Abstract
The international irradiation Association (iiA) is the only global association with members from throughout the world that includes the leading suppliers of both isotope and machine based radiation equipment, multi-national healthcare companies, as well as the providers of over 90% of the world's contract irradiation services. iiA (including its predecessor AIII) and our members continue to play a leading role in the continuing development of industrial radiation-processing applications.
The iiA through committed leadership is building a strong, united global voice to effectively and quickly deal with the challenges facing our industry, to assist in the harmonization of regulations and to take advantage of opportunities to assist and promote the safe use of radiation processing. A good deal of progress is being made to develop a balanced and harmonious interface with existing regional associations who are dealing with local issues that have a global significance whether from a regulatory, scientific or technology perspective. The innovative workshops on radiation sterilization of combination drug-device products hosted by the iiA, are very successful in engaging the participants in discussions which lead to defining a number of issues that need further attention and the action plans to deal with these issues. As well, because of modern technology we are able to connect with a geographically diverse membership base, in a way that shares information and respond to common global issues in a timely and effective manner.
Looking forward, and building on the strengths of a solid foundation, we believe it is important for all those with an interest in advancing the use of radiation processing to work together on key strategic issues, and participate in addressing common industry requirements. This paper discusses accomplishments and a vision for the future of iiA. More essentially, how working together we can most efficiently adapt to a changing world so that radiation-processing use continues to grow, evolve and expand globally.
